Barb Hrbek

Barb has been an Assistant Coach at Judo America, and now at Universal Judo, since 1991. Her willingness to jump in and substitute allowed Coach Hrbek to be away from home extensively during the 1992 Olympic year when he was the US Women's Coach in Barcelona. Barb has continued to work with our children's and beginners' programs, and she also serves as program coordinator for the club's activities. For several years now, Barb has been the "voice on the mike" that has kept things running smoothly and made the San Antonio Open Judo Championship a topflight event.

Assistant Coaches

Lynn Hrbek

Lynn competed extensively as a junior, and after finishing high school joined the Army. In fact, he was in boot camp during the 9/11 attacks in 2001. A partial disability from his military service prevents him from competing but does not limit his assistance with our athletes. Competition notwithstanding, Lynn is a Black Belt, helps out as an Assistant Coach and has been a strong supporter for our club at competitions. He is also a Nurse and he has served as the medical support for many of the club's competitions, including the San Antonio Open.

Nina Cutro-Kelly

Judo:  3rd Degree Black Belt

Nina has extensive martial arts training and  experience, including being the 2014 Gold Almaty Super World Cup Champion is Sambo, a  4x Senior National Judo Champion, and the 2013 French National Champion in BJJ . Nina has trained under Coach Hrbek since 1999, and has gone on from Judo to demonstrate great success in Sambo, BJJ, and Wrestling. Nina holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and Teaching ESL. Fluent in English and French Nina is self employed as an ESL teacher/translator for French professionals.
